Tonight on Blog Talk Radio!

February 20, 2010

Ryan Bucchianeri For PA12Tonight, my Blog Talk Radio show, The Rutherford Lawson Show adds a new dimension! We will periodically be interviewing Progressive Democratic candidates. We kick that endeavor off tonight with Ryan Bucchianeri who is running for US Congress in Pennsylvania’s 12th district. Mr. Bucchianeri has been an announced candidate for the Democratic primary for some time now, in fact prior to the untimely death of Rep. John Murtha, who held the seat for 36 years.

It’s a rather confusing election cycle now, but here is what we know so far: Gov. Ed Rendell has announced, as expected, that the Special Election to fill Mr. Murtha’s seat will be held on the same day as the already scheduled primary, May 18th. The primary itself will still be conducted on that day, so really we have two simultaneous elections.

The State Democratic committee will vote to select a candidate to run in the Special Election; the winner of which will hold the seat until January 2011 when the term ends. The primary, on the other hand, is ostensibly open to any Democratic candidate that can submit the required signatures by the filing deadline of March 9th. It is entirely possible that Ryan Bucchianeri will be chosen as the candidate for the Special Election. (Although relatively young, he is quite accomplished and a Navy veteran, to boot. In fact, he has won two different online polls just this week; so he may be gaining some momentum.) However, that remains to be seen, and there is even talk of Joyce Murtha, Rep Murtha’s widow, running to hold the seat.

The upshot, at any rate, is that there will be a winner of the Special Election and a winner of the Democratic primary. They may not be the same person. However, whoever wins the primary will be the Democratic nominee for the General Election in November and party support and resources will flow to that candidate.

I encourage you to click on Ryan’s picture above and visit his campaign site to learn more about his biography and positions. I even more strongly encourage you to join Rutherford Lawson and myself this evening at 8:00 pm PST/ 11:00 pm EST for the interview. You can call with questions at (347) 202-0742, or you may submit questions and comments by logging into the chat room. Also remember, if you cannot join us live, the show is archived for On-Demand listening within ten minutes of the end of airtime. Hope to see you there!
