Still Waiting for Those Climate Change “Fraud” Retractions

July 9, 2010

Anyone remember last winter? You know, Snowmageddon, or was it the Snowpocalypse? No matter. It was a pretty big deal: the largest storm in 90 years, I believe. Naturally, of course, it was taken as conclusive proof that Global Warming is a cruel hoax, perpetrated to make Al Gore rich. The right wing media loved it, with everyone piling on. Here’s Sean Hannity:

But it wasn’t just the right wing press, the GOP was positively gleeful. The Virginia Republican Party issued an ad asking people to contact two Democratic House Members to tell them “how much global warming you get this weekend.” Notorious Climate change denier Rep. James Inhofe (R-OK) got his whole family in the act, building an igloo on Capitol Hill which they dubbed “Al Gore’s New Home.” Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC) tweeted:

Jim DeMint's "Uncle" tweet to Al GoreEveryone from Glenn Beck to Mitch McConnell taunted poor Al Gore. The mainstream media even did its part, dutifully reporting on the “climate change debate.” All of this, despite the fact that actual scientists continued to explain that these freakishly large winter storms are completely consistent with climate change; and despite the fact that we had just experienced the warmest decade on record, the warmest winter on record, and the warmest January on record.

One must understand that those opposed to climate change science, or at least opposed to actually doing something about climate change, were already feeling rather cocky following the developing “Climate-Gate” story out of the UK’s University of East Anglia. A dozen or so emails, out of thousands, between a handful of researchers, out of tens of thousands of scientists, suddenly proved climate change was a farce. Taken in concert with SnOMG, and the media’s obsessive need for a story, questioning the validity of climate change became the game of the day – to an unfortunately predictable outcome. We find ourselves today with a public much more inclined to believe climate change is exaggerated, and not of serious concern.

Still, even in the depths of the deep freeze, we knew the sun and its heat would return; and now it has – with a vengeance. The very same region so effected by Snowmageddon, is now struggling under an oppressive and dangerous heat wave.  By right wing logic, if a massive snow storm can disprove climate change, then a sweltering heat wave should prove it, right? So I’ve been watching for all those retractions from Hannity, Beck, Inhofe, DeMint, et al…

Think I’ll be waiting a while? Sure. But what if I told you that following a lengthy investigation, those East Anglia researchers have been exonerated? “Climate-Gate” has turned out to be a dud. Perhaps now Glenn Beck will apologize for suggesting those researchers commit suicide? Let’s just say I’m not holding my breath.
