Worried About Deep Budget Cuts? Don’t Be! (Unless You’re Sucking Off the Government!)

July 22, 2011

I’m guessing that Senator Tom Coburn (R, OK) has probably never referred to himself as a “compassionate conservative.” On the other hand, the man does love to tout his status as an actual medical doctor (one with a history of malpractice and Medicaid fraud, but I digress…) We typically think of doctors as being at least at some level concerned with human welfare. When it comes to Tom Coburn, though, we’d be wrong in that assumption.

Case in point: Coburn is part of the Senate’s bipartisan “Gang of Six” responsible for an increasingly popular, if morally reprehensible and economically disastrous, proposal to slash the deficit and put an end to the GOP’s current round of hostage-taking. It’s a plan that would reduce deficits by about $3.7 trillion over the next 10 years, with about $3 trillion of that coming from spending cuts. The plan closely mirrors that of the Bowles-Simpson fiscal commission. Because Americans just loves them some catfood!

As reported by Pat Garofalo at Think Progress:

The plan includes many odious measures, including changes to Social Security that would cut benefits by $1,300 per year. It would institute caps on discretionary spending through 2015, and lays out the amount by which individual agencies need to reduce their budgets (without identifying particular programs).

But according to Coburn, it doesn’t really matter which programs get cut, because, as he told Al-Jazeera English, it’s only people who are “sucking off the program” that are going to feel any change:

COBURN: The point is where’s the efficiency in that? The actual service going to people isn’t going to decline, the people sucking off the program are going to be the ones that lose.

Watch it:

I’m also guessing that the good doctor has little expertise in mental health care, or else he’d surely see the insanity in his own proposals, right? This is a man who claims to believe that we could slash up to $5 Trillion and no one would even notice. That’s  just plain crazy.
