Mitt Romney Hires a Lobbyist – For His House

Mitt Romney: He's Just Like Us!

Sometimes I think Mitt Romney’s entire campaign is just an elaborate joke. I mean, even the most incompetent, out-of-touch candidate ever couldn’t rack up a list of gaffes to rival this, right?

And on and on they go…even his campaign manager gets in on the act. I guess he’s on such a roll – why stop now?

Back in January it was reported that Romney and his wife are planning to quadruple the size  of their existing beachfront home in La Jolla, CA. That revelation played right into the “out-of-touch rich guy” thing he’s got going on, but the story eventually faded away. Until today — when Politico broke the story of Romney’s plans which include an elevator for the cars.

At Mitt Romney’s proposed California beach house, the cars will have their own separate elevator.
There’s also a planned outdoor shower and a 3,600-square foot basement — a room with more floor space than the existing home’s entire living quarters.

Those are just some of the amenities planned for the massive renovation of the Romneys’ home in the tony La Jolla neighborhood of San Diego, according to plans on file with the city.

Wow. That’s gonna be some crib, eh? The thing is that a huge project like this has to jump through a lot of hoops in the permit process. La Jolla city planners will have to approve the plans before Romney’s cars can get that lift. So what do the Romneys do, right smack-dab in the middle of a national campaign? Why they hire a lobbyist, of course!

To help facilitate the construction plans, Romney has paid San Diego attorney Matthew A. Peterson $21,500 since 2008 to lobby city officials for the renovation after dropping out of the 2008 GOP presidential primary…

…It is not unusual for homeowners to hire lobbyists to petition local California boards for large home renovation projects, San Diego officials said.

Oh! It’s perfectly normal, you see. The Romneys can’t be blamed if you’re unfamiliar with how these things work.

Mitt Romney: he’s just like us.
