Will Romney Rock The Youth Vote?

May 19, 2012

Ha ha! Of course not. If youth voters turn out, they’ll more than likely break overwhelmingly for Obama. (Just as they did in 2008.) The infographic below should make that clear. The only real question is if they’ll actually turn out this year. Pay close attention to the section on issues of concern and motivation for young voters, and tell me  what you think: will they turn out like they did in 2008?

It is so sad to see that we had over 23 million young people turn-out in 2008 and did a piss poor job of engaging them after the election. I voted that the honeymoon is over and pray that I am wrong, we need to put a movement together that goes beyond the election. I would love to see an “Occupy Government” movement really take off. It is a common mistake in community organizing that people focus so much on turn-out goals the issues get lost in the shuffle. I am currently working on a blog post that looks into the “disappointment” of the Obama voter and while I believe that Mr. Obama is being judged too harshly, I was frankly “hoping for a little more audacity”.

You’re exactly right. The single biggest mistake the Obama campaign made after the election was turning over OFA to the DNC. They just wasted that tremendous tool/resource.
It’s not just that Obama’s base feels let down by the moderate tone of the administration (that was always going to happen, because whether people realized it or not, Obama ran as a centrist.) Rather, the most motivated of Obama’s base just got left hanging out to dry after the DNC took over.
They could have put those people to work drumming up support for HCR and regional race, etc…etc… In short, they blew a perfect chance to keep a motivated base going beyond the elections. Just imagine if Dems had had something to counter all that Tea Party malarkey… *sigh*
