Marco Rubio Wants to Be Your Daddy — And Bomb Iran

June 4, 2012

Think Progress reports this afternoon on a talk Sen. Marco Rubio (R – FL) gave at the Council on Foreign Relations last week.  The lede is that Rubio endorses a strike against Iran. This is no surprise, as he’s been saying this for months. What I find compelling about the story is glaringly condescending tone Rubio takes regarding how we “prepare” the American people for this inevitability.

RICHARD STENGEL (Moderator): But you would — just to be straight about it — but you would sanction a strike before you would tolerate a nuclear Iran?

RUBIO: Yes and I think that we need to begin to prepare people for that.See, I think that the — not just the people of the country, but the people of the world appreciate when their leaders walk them through this process and explain this is what we’re working on, and more importantly, these are the stakes of a nuclear Iran.

The freshman senator seems to already consider himself a world leader — and goes so far as to prescribe how the masses need to be walked through this so that we’ll come to the correct conclusion. Unfortunately for Rubio, it is not at all clear that he is correct. In fact, a strike against Iran could very well serve to accelerate, rather than arrest their nuclear development.

I’ve scoured his background, and can find no substantive reason why a man who has been in the Senate for all of 16 months is suddenly being lauded for his foreign policy chops. Aside from a short internship for Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R – FL) who serves on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, he has no real qualifications.  D.C. always loves a little saber rattling, but only his supposed standing in the Veepstakes that can explain the seriousness with which he is being regarded.

HK, unfortunately your neighbor can threaten till the cows come home. Until you see that gun pointed at you, finger on trigger, you cannot shoot him. It’s always tricky to extrapolate person-to-person interaction with foreign affairs which are more complex. But I think there is insufficient cause to bomb Iran. To quote someone I saw on TV the other day (I think it was Jeremy Scahill) we are rapidly devolving into “Minority Report” territory where the “pre-crime” unit apprehends/kills you BEFORE you commit a crime. Very scary stuff.

As an aside to Sandi …. be careful about the criticism of Rubio vis-a-vis experience. I’m pretty sure he’s as experienced as Obama was in 2008. In fact, to be perfectly honest, Rubio strikes me as the GOP Latino version of Obama big time.

But Obama wasn’t flitting around as a freshman senator giving “serious” foreign policy talks all over the place.

War in never a popular option because people die and are maimed. It causes unbelievable suffering. I cry every time I go to the Vietnam War Memorial and touch my sister fiance’s name on panel 22W, fifth line down from the top.

In my opinion, the Iraq and the war in Afghanistan have been completely mismanaged after all we are not the friends of these people they are our enemies and should have been treated as such. This nation build crap has caused a lot more deaths that absolutely going in and pancaking those two countries. Break the enemies will to fight. It’s written in every military strategy book.

There are not too many WW2 Veterans left alive but if you sit down and ask them whether it was worth going to war to defeat Hitler you would get an overwhelming yes.

I’m not sure you know much about WW2 history but long story short every effort was made to break the will of the Germans because they were within 3 months of having the atomic bomb. Did you really think the US just whipped up the bomb to drop on Japan without the help of all the captured German scientists?

As far as the Middle East goes we have all the tinder in place for the start of WW3.

My choice would be to see a peaceful solution to this whole mess but honestly the President of Iran continually threatens Israel with being wiped out by the bomb.

To put this in perspective image you have a backyard neighbor to walks up to edge of your property every day and say to you “I’m building a gun and when I finish the gun I’m going to kill you and your family”. This happens every day, the police does nothing, the HOA does nothing. How long would it be before that guy walks up to the edge of your property to threaten for the last time and you put a bullet in his head.

This is the position Israel is in right now. It sucks, but we need to stand with Israel no matter what.
