Louie Gohmert Says Something Stupid: Part 39,456

April 23, 2013

The Inevitable Book From Louie GohmertAnother day, another chance for Rep. Louie Gohmert (R – Crazy Town) to astound us with his brilliance! In today’s episode, Gohmert has, for some inexplicable reason, been tapped as host of the Washington Watch radio show, filling in for Family Research Council president Tony Perkins. The subject is the Boy Scouts’ ban on gays. Luckily, Right Wing Watch listened so you don’t have to (emphasis mine):

Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) defended the Boy Scouts of America’s ban on gay members today by pointing to the scandal surrounding former Republican congressman Mark Foley, who sent sexually explicit messages to several teenage male congressional pages.

[…]

Gohmert: Back when there was a scandal in the House, I guess there was some left-wing group that had found out and then they sat on it for about a year and then right before the election released this story about one of our members from Florida making inappropriate advances toward eight pages, under age. And I heard Representative from San Francisco, Ms. Pelosi, making this speech on the Floor and the thing that really heartened me was because of the things she said I went to the Floor after her and said I am so gratified to know that Ms. Pelosi will now be helping us in maintaining the current position of the Boy Scouts and help us fight off the effort for Boy Scouts based on the things she has said about what’s happened with the page program. But apparently the things she had to say were only to condemn Republicans in an opportune movement that had nothing to do with being consistent when it came to the Boy Scout program…

Also, the Ten Commandments makes homosexuality illegal:

Later in the show, Gohmert told a listener named Jimmy, who warned the BSA against approving a proposal that would allow openly gay youth to join the Scouts, that homosexuality violates the Ten Commandments and as a result churches that host scout troops won’t go along with the new policy.

Worst of all, Satanists are in our parks, disrespecting the Founders…or something…

Gohmert: You can have all kinds of weird beliefs, Satanic or whatever, and you can use the parks but they have made clear if you are a part of the Boy Scouts of America and believe what was contained in so many of the references to the lifestyle back among the Founders then Heaven help you they don’t want you to have anything to do with their parks.

Louie Gohmert is nothing if not consistent — consistently crazy, consistently convoluted, and consistently using every opportunity he can to stupidly stereotype entire groups of people with whom he has an ‘issue’. Former Rep. Mark Foley acted inappropriately with underage boys, so that must mean no gay men should ever have any contact with boys – ever.  Pretty sure this is somehow related to terror babies. Keep ’em coming, Louie!

Here’s something about the Mark Foley scandal that almost everybody missed (or, like Glenn Greenwald, chose to ignore): In order to become a congressional page, one must be sixteen and in their junior year of high school (pages serving during summer terms may do so either before or after their junior year). In the District of Columbia, the legal age of consent is sixteen. I don’t know whether Foley actually had sex with any of the pages, but if he did, it was not illegal. By any measure, it was unethical, though, since he was in a position of authority and power over those young people, and that is wrong no matter whether the person you are imposing yourself upon is sixteen or sixty.

Hmmm. . .a little all-but-forgotten history from Paul Ryan’s (and mine) hometown, Janesville, Wisconsin. I don’t know whether older editions of the Janesville Daily Gazette are available online, to be checked, but local police records will show: Back in the late 1950’s, the local leader, “Doc” Burch, was relieved of his position as leader of the local Boy Scouts’ summer camp, due to “irregularities” in his conduct in tents with several boys. The entire case was pretty much hush-hushed, but enough of the scandal leaked, to diminish the stature of the organization. Sooo. . .like gays are new to the organization???

I would only point out that there’s a difference between homosexuals and pedophiles. The idea that all gays must be banned to save boys from pedophiles is nuts. Especially considering that you never hear the same people calling for, for instance, the elimination of heterosexual men from church youth groups with girls. It’s absolutely nothing but the perpetuation of a vicious lie about gays.
