OMG, BENGAHZI!!! (Or: Hillary Clinton is popular – everybody panic!)

May 8, 2013

It's called perspectiveI’ve said this a few times on the radio show. (But maybe you don’t tune in to the show? You should really fix that.) There’s a very good reason the GOP is still going on and on about Benghazi. That reason’s name is Hillary Clinton. I mean, sure, there’s the desire by Fox News to shovel red meat to their viewers, and of course Darrell Issa and his compadres love free air time to complete the closed circuit circle jerk with their frenzied base — but the number one reason Benghazi is still getting play is that Hillary Clinton is very popular and currently pummeling any hypothetical GOP opponent for the White House in 2016.

In no way do I mean to belittle the death of Ambassador Stevens and the three other victims, but a glance at the above graphic should put this attack in a little perspective. It wasn’t until an attack under the Obama administration that any Republican seemed to notice. (I would also point out that there was a four year gap between the final deaths under Bush and the Benghazi attack.)

For all their parading of “whistle-blowers” before the cameras, the one thing Issa and his crew don’t want to discuss at these hearings is this:

The scope of the proposed House cuts is massive…The truth is that cuts of that level will be detrimental to America’s national security…I was very clear with the Speaker about the deep concerns we have with the FY11 spending bill moving through the House floor this week.”

~ Hillary Clinton, 2/14/2011  – speaking on the Republican slashing of the budget for embassy security

Oh, yeah. That’s right: House Republicans (the same people putting on the circus this week) were responsible for deep cuts to the security budget for US embassies. But quick! Look over there! A grieving mother says she blames Hillary Clinton– get that on the evening news!

It’s actually a two-fold plan. They need to a) bring down Clinton’s numbers as much as they can; and b) reignite right-wing hatred for her, with the kind of vitriol they believe will energize their base in 2016. In other words, it’s time to pivot. The vicious caricature of Obama they’ve stoked for two elections didn’t quite work out electorally, but it kept the fire burning in the belly of the beast base. They now need Hillary Clinton on a broomstick to keep them riled up. It’s pretty sad when your game plan for relevance is predicated on sheer hatred of the opposition, no?
